'Black Panther' Breaks Twitter Record as the Most-Tweeted-About Movie

Black Panther

The latest Marvel movie makes another history after becoming the first film to top the North American box office for five straight weekends since 2009's 'Avatar'.

"Black Panther" continues to set record. The Ryan Coogler-directed film starring Chadwick Boseman establishes itself as a pop-culture phenomenon after breaking record as the most-tweeted-about movie with more than 35 million tweets, according to a new report from Twitter. The latest Marvel superhero film tops previous record-holder, 2015's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", and pushes its sequel, 2017's "Star Wars: The Last Jedi", to the third place.

According to the report, the movie received the biggest fan reactions on the micro-blogging site on February 18, February 17 and February 19 respectively, following its release on February 16. The most-used "Black Panther"-related hashtags are #BlackPanther, #WakandaForever and #Wakanda. The film's titular hero, Black Panther, was the most tweeted character, followed by the movie's antagonist Killmonger and Black Panther's younger sister Shuri in the second and third places.

Kendrick Lamar's announcement about the movie soundtrack, including the cover art and the tracklist, was one of the most-retweeted tweets about the film. Former First Lady Michelle Obama's praise for the film was another of the most popular tweets about the movie. Most of the tweets came from fans in the U.S., followed by social media users in the U.K. and Thailand.

The Twitter record set by "Black Panther" comes after the movie became the first film to top the North American box office for five straight weeks since 2009's "Avatar". It even fended off the new "Tomb Raider" movie from taking over the top spot. "Black Panther" is also the second-fastest film to gross the $600 million status domestically, only behind "Star Wars: The Force Awakens".

Collecting more than $607 million domestically and $1.2 billion worldwide so far, it is on course to become the highest-grossing solo superhero movie ever. By next weekend, the pic is expected to pass 2012's "The Avengers" as the highest-grossing superhero film ever, not accounting for inflation.

New release "Pacific Rim Uprising" is predicted to take the top spot on the chart this week, though "Black Panther" will stay steady with a minimal decrease.
