“I am not afraid of being sacked”- Kwesi Appiah

Black Stars head coach, Kwesi Appiah, says he is not afraid of losing his job with the national team since he has total belief in his new project.

Appiah has been giving the team a face-lift since his appointment in May this year and he has given call-ups to newer players.

Players like Edwin Gyasi, Raphael Dwamena, Lumor Agbenyenu, Kassim Nuhu, Ebenezer Ofori and Thomas Agyepong have all featured for the national team since Appiah’s return to the team and it looks very certain that they will be key parts of the national team going forward.

In an interview with Ernest Koranteng on Metro TV’s “Sports File” programme on Wednesday, he said that he was ready to face the consequences of his own decisions with the national team.

“You see, you learn a lot and there are so many things that happen in the background. In my first spell, I was afraid of so many things like getting the sack and all.

But now, I am not afraid of getting the sack. I am not afraid of taking any decision. There is nothing I am afraid of now because, at the end of the day, it does not go well, it is all on me.

I always do all I need to in order to get the best out of my work. People can suggest but they cannot interfere with my work.”

He also commented on media reports saying that he had personal issues with the Ayew Brothers and that was why they had not been called since the 1-1 draw with Congo Brazzaville in Kumasi.

Andre and Jordan Ayew were not available for the 5-1 victory in Brazzaville due to injury and ill health respectively and Appiah was quick to shoot down speculation the two brothers had come to the end of their line with him and the national team.

“I personally do not want to dwell on names of players who have not been invited. I do not even listen to the radio or watch Ghanaian television. I choose to focus on what I want to do with the national team.

I always have a good idea of what I want to do and no one can instruct me on my course of action. No player is out of my team and no one is guaranteed a permanent place. By next year, I will make sure I have my team so we prepare for the 2019 AFCON tournament.”

The 2019 AFCON qualifiers will continue in 2018 and after beating Ethiopia in 2017, Ghana will face Kenya (in Nairobi) in March, Sierra Leone (doubleheader) in September, Ethiopia in October, and Kenya (in Ghana) in November.
